When your 7.63 year old is already better than you at chess…see our respective rankings above…

It’s not only extremely humbling, but it’s also probably time to find him a more advanced instructor.

And that’s what we’re doing now.

I’ve procured the services of a highly ranked (2100 rating) tutor for 1-on-1 lessons for John at only $35 per hour.

I had been under the impression that tutors around here were $60 per hour – which I thought was a little steep. But I had never really looked.

Where did I find him?

Online of course.

Here are a few places you can find tutors advertising their services:

Craigslist.org

Tutorspree.com

Wyzant.com

NextGuru.com

Hint – tutors on the last three sites can usually be hired for LESS than the advertised rate….so long as you pay them cash and cut out the middleman (website).

There are probably good chess tutors overseas that can teach you/your children over Skype, but my cursory search couldn’t find one. I would guess at less than $10 an hour too. Perhaps I’ll hire one of those for myself to mitigate the embarrassment?!?!?!

You wouldn’t mind but I’VE BEEN PRACTICING A LOT – way more than my son.

But John’s young mind simply sees the board much, much better.
